When Maya started her job at Fairhills Care Center, she thought it was going to be fantastic. Her employee training taught her the policies and procedures of the care center, and Maya felt confident she could do her job well.
But all that changed when she worked her first night shift.
Missy was the lead CNA at Fairhills for the night shift. When Maya reported to her, Missy told her they would be partnering up for the night. The first patient they checked on was Mr. Wilbur. Unfortunately, Mr. Wilber had had a bowel movement that leaked out of his diaper. Maya knew cleaning up the patient would be quick and smooth with two of them helping, but Missy just stood at the door and told Maya to clean him up.
After making the rounds of the residents, Maya and Missy headed back to the nursing station where Missy flopped into a chair and took out her cell phone. Maya knew that they should be charting what they had observed and asked Missy what to do. Missy told her that she would just copy the notes from the previous night. A few minutes later, a call light went on in Mrs. Franklin’s room. Maya started down the hall, but Missy yelled out at her to not bother because the Mrs. Franklin was just lonely and difficult to deal with.
Maya went to Mrs. Franklin’s room anyway and found that the resident had fallen. Thankfully she wasn’t injured, but she did need help to get back into her bed.
At the end of her shift, Maya knew that she needed to do something about Missy, but she didn’t know what.
